Collapsed Barn Hay Loft Sapling Rising in along freshly irrigated rows in Namibia

Collapsed Barn Hay Loft Sapling Rising

by Kate Moore

Low morning light spills over a crumbling red-earth barn in Namibia, its roof caved in to reveal a tangle of dry hay. A solitary green sapling punches upward from the loft debris, its thin trunk stark against the dark, rotted timber. Fresh irrigation water glistens in parallel rows stretching into the distance, cutting through the dry season dust. Thick ground fog pools in the furrows, softening the base of the structure while the sun's first rays catch the mist's edge. The barn's wooden beams show deep cracks and weathering, framing the small plant that thrives in the ruin. one drop of dew rests on the tip of the sapling's highest leaf.
