Tinsmith Soldering Copper Gutter at Kinshasa Harbor Twilight
by Roy Rice
Deep indigo shadows envelop the harbor edge in Kinshasa as a tinsmith works on a copper rainwater gutter. A sharp rim light outlines the worker's silhouette against the dimming sky, highlighting the metallic sheen of the copper seam being soldered. Fine raindrops rest on the darkened surface of the metal and the tinsmith's clothing, catching the faint ambient glow. The wide panoramic view reveals the rough texture of the wooden pier beneath the worker's feet and the blurred, dark water of the Congo River stretching into the distance. Overhead, corrugated tin roofs of nearby structures reflect the fading twilight. The soldering iron glows with a small, intense orange point of light, against the cool blue tones of the rainy evening. One droplet of water rolls down the curved copper gutter, tracing a path through the grime.
