Melting Steel Beam in Kinshasa Factory in beside a blast furnace near Kinshasa

Melting Steel Beam in Kinshasa Factory

by Donovan Rosales

Deep blue shadows pool across wet concrete floors inside the Kinshasa industrial plant, illuminated by harsh security lights that cast long, sharp reflections. A massive steel support beam, usually rigid and unyielding, drips slowly from its upper joint like thick orange wax. The molten metal gathers in a glowing, viscous puddle at the base, defying the cold wetness of the season. Heavy pipes and machinery line the walls, their surfaces gleaming with moisture from the wet season air. The floor stretches away in a grid of wet tiles, guiding the gaze toward the impossible flow of solid metal. one drop of the glowing substance hits the concrete, sending a ripple through the reflected light.
