Cobbler Tacking Sole at Dawn in Cuttack Old Quarter
Dust hangs low in the air, catching the pale gray light of nautical dawn as it skims across the workbench. A cobbler stands at the edge of the frame, hands working a leather sole onto an iron last. The dry season air leaves the wood grain of the bench rough and pale, against the dark, worn leather. Sidelight highlights the curve of the iron last and the tension in the thread as it pierces the material. Behind the worker, the worn plaster of the old quarter wall shows patches of peeling paint and exposed brick. The cobbler's forearm is dusted with fine particles, and the shadow of the iron last stretches sharply across the floorboards. One hammer rests on a small wooden block nearby.
