Sandstone Cliff Dwelling Kashmir Noon Light in in Kashmir

Sandstone Cliff Dwelling Kashmir Noon Light

by Clayton Baird

Rough-hewn sandstone blocks form a multi-tiered structure clinging to a sheer cliff face in early autumn. The stone surfaces display warm ochre and rust tones, textured by wind erosion into shallow grooves and pitted hollows. Soft, diffused light from an overcast sky eliminates harsh shadows, allowing the subtle variations in rock grain to stand out clearly. Above, dramatic dark clouds press low against the pale blue sky, against the earthy tones below. Sparse vegetation with yellowing leaves clings to crevices in the masonry. A narrow stone ledge runs horizontally along the base of the lowest dwelling, ending abruptly at a jagged rock edge.
