Sunlight slants through the narrow gap between two limestone buildings in Gemmayze, illuminating a narrow service stairwell where a rusted iron deadbolt hangs from a wooden door frame. Below, a concrete step is worn smooth by decades of feet, catching a patch of golden hour light that reveals scattered olive pits and a single, polished olive wood spoon resting near the threshold. A faded blue mailbox is bolted to the wall beside the door, its surface scratched and peeling under the heat.
