Balcony Scene in Beirut
by Kofi Higgins
Golden hour light spills across a weathered limestone facade in the Gemmayze district, illuminating a narrow balcony cluttered with the quiet chaos of domestic life. Two faded green metal stools sit tucked against the railing, their paint chipped to reveal rusted iron underneath. A terracotta pot holds a cluster of vibrant red geraniums, their leaves catching the warm, low-angle sun while casting long, sharp shadows against the cream-colored plaster. A simple wooden peg rail is mounted above, holding a single damp dish towel that flutters slightly in the evening breeze. Below, the street level is a blur of passing scooters and pedestrians, their forms softened by the distance and the haze of heat rising from the asphalt.
