Sunlight cuts sharply across a weathered stucco facade in the Gemmayze district, casting the intricate, lattice-like shadow of a wooden lattice window against the warm ochre plaster. A local man in a faded blue work shirt pauses on the narrow sidewalk, wiping his hands on a rag before adjusting the rusted hinge of a heavy, teal-painted wooden door. The door’s surface shows layers of peeling paint and small dents, hinting at decades of use. Above him, a wrought-iron balcony railing, typical of Beirut’s Ottoman-era architecture, creates a complex geometric pattern against the bright sky.
