Stone Cornfield Tassels Armenia Storm in along freshly irrigated rows in Armenia

Stone Cornfield Tassels Armenia Storm

by Esteban O'Connor

Hard coastal glare floods the flat afternoon sky over freshly irrigated rows of corn in late autumn Armenia. The tassels sway with sudden wind, their silken fibers frozen in a stone transformation that begins at the stalks and climbs upward. Wooden furniture fragments rest among the crops, their grain patterns preserved in rough, gray rock as they slowly mineralize. A brief sun shower drips from the clouds, beading on the petrified surfaces and the wet, dark soil. Leading lines of the irrigation furrows draw toward the horizon where the sky turns a bruised purple. at the edge is a single tassel tip fully calcified, its delicate edge now a sharp, unyielding point of stone against the wet ground.
