Mughal Pavilion in Kampala Skylit Passage

by Jesse Villegas

Bright noon light floods a skylit passageway in Kampala, illuminating the intricate stone carvings of a Mughal garden pavilion. Raindrops streak down the glass skylight above, blurring the harsh overhead glare into soft, shifting patterns on the red sandstone floor. Water beads on the carved arches, highlighting the deep relief of floral motifs and geometric latticework. The wet stone reflects the pale sky, creating a glossy sheen that contrasts with the matte texture of the dry interior walls. A lone figure stands beneath the central arch, posture rigid and chin lifted, their dark clothing absorbing the light while the water cascades around them. at the edge shows one drop of water clinging to the tip of a stone finial, trembling before falling onto the wet pavement below.
