Starling Murmuration Sweeps Ridge at Night in on a wind-scoured ridge in Nepal

Starling Murmuration Sweeps Ridge at Night

by Cesar McKinney

A rhythmic sweep of white light cuts across the dark silhouette of a wind-scoured ridge in Nepal. Hundreds of starlings blur into a single, fluid mass as they bank sharply through the air. The late autumn night hangs heavy, with heat haze shimmering faintly above the rocky ground. The lighthouse beam illuminates the flock's rapid rotation, turning individual birds into streaks of gray and black against the bright arc. Below, the terrain is rough and stony, scattered with dry, brittle grasses that bow under the wind. The light edge of the beam catches the dust motes rising from the ridge, while the rest of the landscape dissolves into deep shadow. A final streak of blurred feathers crosses the brightest part of the light arc.
