Staircase in Abu Dhabi Mosque Carpet
by Fred Wilcox
Vibrant red and teal geometric patterns stretch across a plush carpet toward a curved mihrab niche. Stained glass windows cast shifting patches of amber, cobalt, and emerald light onto the floor, illuminating the intricate tile work. A surreal paradox emerges in the center where a polished marble staircase rises from the carpet while simultaneously descending into the same landing, defying gravity yet maintaining sharp spatial clarity. The stone steps gleam with small, sharp highlights where the colored light strikes them. The low angle emphasizes the vastness of the prayer hall and the impossible geometry of the structure. Dust motes float in the beams of light, and the polished surfaces reflect the vivid colors of the stained glass, at the base of the impossible architecture in a tangible, solemn atmosphere.
