Surreal White Stupas in Mandalay Mosque
by Duane Dunn
Golden sunset light pools across the polished tile floor of a Mandalay prayer hall, illuminating rows of miniature white stupas that emerge from the interior space. The geometric arches of the mosque frame the view, creating a window into a landscape where the hard tile floor seamlessly transitions into soft, rolling sand dunes. Tiny white structures dot the dunes like a distant hillside, their smooth surfaces catching the warm amber glow. Quiet shadows stretch along the ornate walls, against the bright, impossible expanse of sand. A wooden pillar in the foreground anchors the impossible horizon, while dust motes hang still in the shafts of light. The boundary between the sacred indoor architecture and the outdoor dunes dissolves at the threshold, leaving the white stupas suspended between two realities.
