Islamic Geometric Tilework in Herat Madrasa

by Angelica McIntosh

Pale limestone walls glow under the flat, broad glare of noon sunlight filtering through a high skylight. Deep blue and turquoise geometric patterns inlaid with gold mosaic lines create a rhythmic grid across the curved surface of the madrasa. The intricate star and polygon motifs repeat with mathematical precision, their sharp edges casting soft, warm shadows into the recessed grooves. Dust motes float in the bright beams, settling on the smooth, cool glaze of the ceramic tiles. A wooden archway frames the detailed section, its dark grain against the luminous stone. Autumn light turns the pale plaster a creamy yellow near the floor, while the upper reaches remain stark white. The final line of the pattern ends abruptly at the edge of the shadowed arch.
