Frost Feathers on Window in Kumba Stair Hall

by Sara Burt

Delicate ice crystals form intricate feather patterns across the glass of a north-facing window. Pale gray sidelight from the late afternoon sky illuminates the fractal structures, highlighting their sharp, branching edges against the dark interior. The tiled walls of the stair hall recede into shadow, where warm lamplight settles into the corners, casting soft glows on the rough ceramic surfaces. Reflections in the glass create a mirrored composition, doubling the view of the frost and the dim hallway behind. The glass surface remains cold and still, preserving the fragile geometry of the frozen water. A thin line of condensation traces the bottom edge of the pane, marking the boundary between the indoor warmth and the rainy season chill outside.
