Painted Shutters in Long Shadows in inside a tiled stair hall in Belas

Painted Shutters in Long Shadows

by Sam Duncan

Pale walls in the tiled stair hall of Belas reflect soft, indirect light that softens the late afternoon sun. Two painted wooden shutters stand against the corner, their surfaces marked by the deep, sharp lines of long shadows stretching diagonally across the floor. The tiles below gleam with a wet sheen, hinting at the monsoon season outside. Red and white paint on the shutters creates a rhythmic pattern interrupted by the dark, geometric intrusion of the shadow. The clean surfaces of the hall remain free of clutter, showing the graphic tension between the bright wood and the encroaching darkness. A thin line of blue light cuts along the base of the lower shutter where it meets the wet tile.
