Spinning Colors Through Kaleidoscope in Train Terminal

by Spencer Bond

Honeyed evening light floods the restored train terminal in Bujumbura, illuminating dust motes suspended in the air. A hand holds a kaleidoscope pressed firmly against an eye, fracturing the room into a spiral of geometric patterns. The device reflects warm interior shadows cast by high arched windows and rusted steel beams. Diagonal lines of the terminal architecture create tension against the circular motion of the spinning glass shards inside the instrument. The turn of seasons is visible in the golden hue of the light and the weathered texture of the floor tiles. At the edge of the view, a sliver of the terminal's concrete wall appears, at the base of the abstract swirl in physical reality.
