Heavy gray clouds hang low over the civic plaza in Merca, diffusing the late afternoon light into a soft, even glow. Rows of colorful umbrellas stand open, their fabric taut against the weight of the dry season air. Beneath the canopy of a nearby tree, dappled shadows dance across the packed earth ground where vigil participants hold small candles. The wax flames flicker with a steady, warm orange against the cool, muted tones of the overcast sky. People stand close together, their forms silhouetted by the umbrella frames. one drop of water beads on the edge of a blue umbrella, reflecting the dull light before falling to the dusty floor.
