A circle of people stands in the stone courtyard of a cathedral near Bishkek, illuminated by sweeping beams of light that cut through the deep autumn night. The beams reveal the texture of worn cobblestones and the heavy wool coats worn by the participants. Paper leaflets scatter across the ground and flutter in the cold wind, their edges catching the stark white light before falling again. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the foreground, while the background fades into darkness where the architecture of the cathedral looms silently. The light sweeps across faces turned upward, highlighting the dust motes and the rough surface of the paper documents held in trembling hands. One leaflet rests against a stone step, its printed text barely visible in the shadow.
