Snow Drift and Neon on Brisbane Street in beside a steamed-up bus shelter in Brisbane

Snow Drift and Neon on Brisbane Street

by Brooklyn Burt

A rusted red fire hydrant emerges from a lumpy mound of white snow in a narrow back alley. Steam rises from the glass panels of a nearby bus shelter, blurring the view behind it. Neon light from storefronts spills across the wet pavement, reflecting off the slush and creating streaks of electric blue and green. Dark leaves and crumpled paper tumble along the curb, caught in the wind. The hydrant stands low against the dark brick wall, its metal surface slick with condensation. Rain beads on the shelter's edge, dripping slowly onto the frozen ground. one drop of water hangs from the hydrant's nozzle, catching the neon glow before falling into the snow.
