Snow Drift and Hydrant in Nagoya Alley

by Khalil Liu

A red fire hydrant emerges partially from a deep, white snowdrift pressing against a rain-darkened kiosk wall. The wet asphalt reflects the gray, heavy overcast sky, turning the ground into a sheet of murky mirrors. Puddles ripple with reflected light, highlighting the texture of the melting snow and the rusted metal of the hydrant. Early autumn leaves, brown and damp, rest on the low branches overhead, against the sudden snow. The alley feels narrow, enclosed by the kiosk and the hydrant, with a shallow depth of field blurring the background into soft, restless bokeh. One red bolt on the hydrant cap catches the dim, diffused light.
