Silhouetted Sugar Cane Field in Beijing Rain

by Jonah McCoy

Tall stalks of sugar cane rise in dense rows, their dark forms stark against the fading blue twilight sky. Steady rain streaks vertically through the air, blurring the horizon where a harvested grain field meets the urban edge near Nanluoguxiang. The early winter light casts a cool, uniform glow that turns the crops into deep black silhouettes. Water beads on the waxy leaves and drips from the sharp, angular tips of the cane. The ground appears dark and saturated, reflecting the faint ambient light. In the distance, the faint outline of traditional architecture merges with the storm, at the base of the agricultural scene within the specific context of Beijing. Raindrops catch the last of the daylight on the wet stalks.
