Solemn Chinese Lanterns at Xian Waterfront

Steel-blue twilight washes over the waterfront in Xian, where rows of red paper lanterns hang suspended against the darkening sky. Each orb glows with a warm amber light, illuminating handwritten Chinese characters and riddles on their surfaces. The wet pavement reflects the soft illumination, creating shimmering pools of red and gold. Humid air hangs heavy, condensing on the smooth paper and the metal chains that hold the lanterns aloft. People stand in quiet clusters, their dark silhouettes framed by the glowing orbs. In the distance, the faint outline of city lights begins to pierce the evening haze, matching the steady rhythm of the lanterns. One riddle written in black ink rests on the lower curve of the nearest lantern, sharp against the translucent paper.
