Steam and Rain at Qingdao Pho Restaurant in beneath a flickering underpass light in Qingdao

Steam and Rain at Qingdao Pho Restaurant

by Gianna Perry

Sodium-vapor light casts a warm, amber wash over wet pavement beneath a flickering underpass fixture. Thick white steam rises from a steaming bowl of pho, merging with falling raindrops in the cool blue hour air. The broth surface reflects the overhead glow, while translucent noodles and herbs sit visible inside the ceramic bowl. Rain slicks the ground, creating distorted reflections of the neon signage and the streetlamp above. A foreground railing blurs slightly, framing the scene with clear candid immediacy. Heat shimmer distorts the air just above the bowl, wavering against the damp concrete. Droplets rest on the rim of the bowl, ready to slide onto the metal table.
