Silhouetted Firing Range Ruin in Hargeisa Scrub

by Alexandra Bass

Honeyed evening light slices through the arid landscape near Hargeisa, casting the skeletal remains of a firing range into sharp silhouette. Blown sand accumulates in deep drifts against crumbling concrete walls, while thorn scrub pushes through fractured foundations. The structure frames a view of the open horizon, its empty rooms hollowed by years of neglect. Wind sweeps across the interior, scattering fine dust that glows in the backlight. Thorny branches intrude from the periphery, their dark forms overlapping the geometric lines of the ruin. at the edge is a jagged shard of metal protruding from a sand-filled corner, catching the last rays of sun.
