Shaking Umbrella in New York

Rain streaks the fogged glass of a corner bodega in Queens, blurring the neon pharmacy cross into a soft pink smear against the dusk. Inside, a teenager in a yellow raincoat shakes a wet umbrella, sending droplets onto the scuffed linoleum. On the counter, a half-eaten slice of pepperoni pizza sits next to a steaming cup of coffee, the heat rising in thin, wavering lines. The clerk, visible through the condensation, watches a customer argue good-naturedly over the price of a lottery ticket. Outside, the streetlights reflect off the wet pavement, casting long, distorted shadows of passing cars.
