Neon Diner Counter Seen Through Rainy Window in outside a fluorescent convenience store in Kigali

Neon Diner Counter Seen Through Rainy Window

by Yvonne Harris

Flat noon light washes over wet pavement where silver rain streaks run down a glass pane. Through the distorted surface, a diner counter glows with cool artificial light. The interior reveals a long, curved seating area lined with high stools. Fluorescent tubes hang above, casting a stark, clinical brightness against the gray afternoon. Outside, the drizzle turns the asphalt into a reflective sheet of dark stone. Red neon tubing traces the edge of the window frame, its glow softening as it meets the damp glass. Droplets cluster along the bottom sill, distorting the view of the floor tiles inside. One plastic cup sits on the counter, catching the overhead light.
