Arranging Produce in Toronto

by Gianna Banks

Rain slicks the pavement outside a small grocery on Danforth Avenue, where a vendor in a translucent blue rain poncho leans over a wooden crate to adjust a display of bright red peppers. A striped towel, damp and heavy, hangs from the handle of a metal cart, dripping onto the wet concrete. The vendor’s hands, gloved in thin latex, carefully arrange the produce under the glow of a flickering fluorescent bulb that reflects in the puddles. A straw hat rests on a stack of cardboard boxes nearby, ignored by the steady drizzle. The mundane rhythm of street commerce, with the vibrant colors of the vegetables contrasting against the grey, rain-soaked urban backdrop.
