Fluorescent tubes buzz overhead inside a weathered metal awning, casting a sickly green glow on the wet pavement below. Three figures stand shoulder to shoulder, heads bowed as fingers swipe across glowing smartphone screens. The light from a nearby bakery window spills a warm orange hue across the damp concrete, against the cool blue spill from a liquor store sign further down the block. Heat shimmer distorts the air just above the asphalt, blurring the edges of a parked car in the distance. Rain droplets rest on the corrugated roof, catching the neon reflection in tiny, fractured prisms. A discarded paper cup rests against the base of a brick pillar, stained dark by the night's dampness.
