Cab Reflection in New York

by Kendra Sweeney

First light after rain reveals a damp Manhattan stoop where a yellow cab’s brake lights bleed into the wet pavement, creating a slick mirror of crimson and gray. A corner bodega’s metal roll-down gate stands half-lowered, its ridged surface reflecting the overcast sky and the neon sign of a nearby laundromat. Steam rises from a subway grate, softening the harsh lines of the brick facade and the fire escape’s iron railings. A lone pedestrian in a dark raincoat steps carefully over a puddle, their reflection distorted by the rippling water.
