Sage Smudging Ceremony in Punto Fijo Twilight
by Claire Stone
Rows of warm string lights hang from the high ceiling of a prayer hall in Punto Fijo, casting a soft amber glow against the heavy overcast sky visible through open eaves. Inside, a group gathers for a Native American smudging ceremony, their figures silhouetted against the fading twilight. Bundles of dried sage rest in shallow clay bowls, their grey-green leaves releasing thin, swirling plumes of smoke that drift toward the rafters. The wet season air hangs thick, evidenced by the glistening sheen on the concrete floor and the damp, darkening clouds pressing against the open sides of the structure. Wooden beams support the roof overhead, weathered by rain, while the smoke mingles with the cool blue-grey light of the approaching night, creating a layered haze around the participants. At the edge, a faint rising curl of smoke catches a beam of amber light near the center of the room.
