Preparing Wontons in Kaohsiung

by Nina Hickman

Rain-slicked asphalt in Kaohsiung’s Gushan District reflects the muted gray sky and the neon glow of a nearby pharmacy sign. A street vendor in a translucent yellow raincoat stands beside a stainless steel noodle cart, steam rising in thin columns against the cool, post-rain air. The vendor uses a bamboo pastry brush to coat wonton wrappers with egg wash, the motion blurred slightly by the early morning light. Beside the cart, a stack of plastic stools sits under a corrugated awning, dripping water onto the wet pavement. A pedestrian in a dark umbrella walks past, their reflection distorted in a puddle near the vendor’s rubber boots.
