Adjusting Stools in Taipei

by Natalie Morin

Rain-slicked asphalt in Taipei’s Wanhua District reflects the neon glow of a closed noodle stall as first light breaks through the heavy overcast. A street vendor in a translucent yellow rain poncho adjusts a stack of white plastic stools, the wet surface amplifying the pink and blue reflections of nearby signage. Mop water gathers in the grout lines between the uneven concrete tiles, catching the diffuse ambient light. In the background, a delivery scooter idles near a pile of empty fruit crates, while steam rises faintly from a nearby vent, mixing with the damp air.
