Preparing Dough in Surabaya

Mist rests on the corrugated zinc roofs of a dense Surabaya kampung at dawn, softening the sharp angles of the tightly packed shophouses. On a narrow concrete balcony, a woman in a striped towel leans over a low plastic table, her hands moving with practiced rhythm as she shapes dough. Beside her sits a speckled stoneware glaze bowl, its rough texture against the smooth, wet surface of the table. A small flowering plant in a chipped ceramic cup sits precariously on the railing, its bright petals catching the faint, diffused light filtering through the fog.
