Arranging Pastries in Surabaya

Rain-slicked asphalt in Surabaya’s Gubeng district reflects the bruised purple sky as a street vendor arranges glossy enamel trays of colorful pastries on a folding table. The first light catches the wet sheen of the metal bucket nearby, against the rough, damp concrete of the sidewalk. A customer in a translucent raincoat reaches for a blue and white porcelain cup, steam rising in thin, cold lines against the gray morning. The scene is crisp and saturated, with the vibrant orange and yellow of the baked goods popping against the muted, wet urban backdrop. Raindrops bead on the table runner, adding texture to the otherwise smooth, reflective surfaces of the street furniture and the vendor’s apron.
