Carrot Furrow Silhouetted Against Dead Sea Sky in across a harvested grain field in the Dead Sea

Carrot Furrow Silhouetted Against Dead Sea Sky

by Ronnie Strickland

Water beads rest on the dark, tapered shapes of carrots growing in a long, raised furrow. The plants stand in sharp silhouette against a fading late spring evening sky over the arid Dead Sea basin. Fine chaff and dust drift through the backlight, catching the light as golden specks that float above the dark soil. The earth is rough and textured, against the smooth, wet surfaces of the vegetable roots. Leading lines formed by the furrow guide the view deep into the harvested grain field beyond. The scene balances the dark, heavy mass of the crops with the airy, suspended particles hanging in the still air. One droplet slides slowly down the curved side of a carrot leaf tip.
