Organ Pipe Cactus Near Isfahan Canyon
by April Peters
Brick-red rock walls rise steeply on either side of a narrow canyon floor near Isfahan, their surfaces etched with deep vertical fissures and patches of pale lichen. In the immediate foreground, a cluster of organ pipe cacti stands tall, their cylindrical green stems branching in tight, parallel columns that reach toward the harsh noon sun. The light is flat and unforgiving, casting short, sharp shadows directly beneath the ribbed spines of the plants. Dry, cracked earth surrounds the base of the cactus, scattered with small, angular stones that match the color of the surrounding canyon walls. The sky above is a blank, brilliant blue, devoid of clouds, showing the arid silence of the late summer landscape. A fine layer of dust coats the lower ribs of the cactus, blending seamlessly with the reddish soil.
