Orangutan Nest Building in Bhutan Canopy
by Vicki Carson
Twilight deepens around a massive canopy where an orangutan constructs a nest. The primate's reddish-brown fur catches a thin rim of fading light against the darkening foliage. Dust hangs low above the ground, suspended in the shadowy air beneath the branches. A frame-within-a-frame formed by interlocking vines isolates the subject from the background. The turn of seasons is visible in the mix of green and yellowing leaves scattered across the forest floor. The structure of the nest sits high, woven from flexible branches that bend under the animal's weight. Shadows stretch long across the bark, defining the texture of the tree trunk and the rough surface of the leaves. One leaf rests on the edge of the nest, catching the last glow of the day.
