Springbok Pronking Under Lighthouse Light
by Taylor Kirk
A rhythmic beam of white light cuts across the dark, wind-scoured ridge in Algeria, illuminating a springbok mid-leap against the night sky. The animal’s coat glows with a warm, pale gold hue where the beam strikes, contrasting sharply with the deep indigo shadows that swallow the rest of the plain. Heat haze shimmers visibly in the air, distorting the horizon line and blurring the distant, flat terrain. The springbok’s legs are tucked tightly beneath its body, showing the peak of a pronk jump. Dust particles swirl in the sudden brightness, caught in the sweep of the artificial light. The animal lands on the rough, dry earth, its hooves kicking up fine grains that settle immediately in the stillness of the surrounding darkness.
