Northern Lights Train Car at Miyajima Harbor
by Wendy James
Vivid ribbons of green and purple aurora borealis arc across the deep night sky, their light trails shimmering with a long-exposure glow. Below, the dark waters of a harbor near Miyajima reflect faint lantern light from wooden posts lining the shore. A layer of low, distant haze settles on the horizon, softening the edge where the sea meets the sky. The impossible element stands starkly against this natural backdrop: a solitary passenger train car is embedded directly into the water's surface, its windows glowing with warm interior light. The train's metal siding reflects the celestial colors above, creating a surreal contrast between the industrial object and the organic movement of the aurora. Wooden pilings from the harbor structure surround the train, anchoring the impossible scene in the concrete reality of the Japanese coastal setting.
