Northern Lights Over Hokkaido Snow Fences at Night

by Darren Lugo

Violet and green auroras stretch across the deep indigo sky above a snow-covered field in Hokkaido. Thin black telegraph wires slice horizontally through the luminous display, creating a stark geometric contrast against the fluid light. Below, wooden snow fences stand in parallel rows, their surfaces dusted with melting snow from the early spring thaw. A faint, diffuse glow rises from the horizon, mixing with a low, gray haze that softens the distant landscape. The moonlight washes the snow in cool blue tones while the electric greens of the sky provide a sharp, cool brightness. Dark shadows pool beneath the fence slats, at the base of the scene in the heavy stillness of the night. The texture of the frozen ground appears rough and uneven where the thaw has begun to take hold.
