Neon Commuters Reflecting Under Zhengzhou Train Tracks
by Arnold Huynh
Late spring twilight settles under the concrete ribs of an elevated train line in Zhengzhou. A shallow puddle on the asphalt shows the inverted silhouettes of commuters crossing the street, their forms distorted by ripples. Neon signs cast vertical streaks of electric blue and magenta across the wet surface. A solitary trash bag floats in the center of the reflection, glowing with a soft, internal white light that illuminates the surrounding water without any visible source. Wind funnels dry leaves and paper scraps along the curb, creating a line of debris that mirrors the commuters' movement. The backlit figures stand stark against the fading orange horizon, their shapes sharp and dark against the glowing reflection. One glowing leaf rests near the puddle's edge, casting a faint white halo on the dark pavement.
