Net Mender Hands at Dawn in Misty Sydney Harbor

by Derek Kaur

Mist rests on the corrugated iron walls of a weathered harbor shed in a Manly village lane, softening the edges of rust and peeling paint. A net mender stands in the center of the frame, their hands rough and stained with salt and tar as they work a thick, wet rope through a mesh of fishing net. Early spring light falls through the drizzle, casting a cool, gray glow over the wet pavement and the damp fibers of the net. Water droplets bead on the mender's knuckles and slide down the coarse twine. The scene is quiet, with only the texture of the rope and the sheen of rain visible against the muted tones of the shed and the misty background.
