Cold silver light washes over a concrete harbor quay near Macau under heavy overcast skies. A lone figure stands amidst rows of drying saffron threads, their hands moving rhythmically over shallow trays. The dry season air leaves the ground bare and dusty, against the vibrant orange-red threads spread across the metal surfaces. Shadows stretch long and soft across the wet pavement, showing the vast emptiness of the morning. The figure wears simple, muted clothing that blends into the gray stone surroundings. In the distance, the dark silhouette of a ship hangs low against the pale horizon. One reflection of the picker’s bent form glimmers on a damp patch of concrete near their feet.
