Monks Blowing Horns in Zhangjiajie Autumn Rain

by Preston Huang

Pale silver dawn light falls through steady rain, coating the ancient stone steps of Zhangjiajie in a slick, reflective sheen. Three monks in deep crimson robes stand at the edge of the frame, their faces partially obscured by the mist. They hold long, curved horns made of polished brass and wood, lifting them toward the gray sky. Raindrops bead on the textured fabric of their sleeves and slide down the weathered wood of the instruments. Behind them, the jagged silhouettes of quartzite sandstone pillars rise from the autumn mist, their surfaces dotted with patches of yellow and orange foliage clinging to the rock faces. The wet ground mirrors the pale sky, creating a seamless blend of earth and atmosphere. Water drips from the rim of the nearest monk's hat onto the mossy step below.
