Heavy slate-gray clouds blanket the late afternoon sky above the open ground in Porto Alegre. Soft, diffused light flattens the shadows across the parade ground where soldiers stand in a rigid drill line. Their olive-green uniforms absorb the muted tones of the damp autumn air. Beside the formation, a convoy halt rests on wet earth, the dark tires of military vehicles pressing into the saturated soil. Wet patches on the asphalt mirror the uniform gray of the overcast ceiling. At the edge, the precise alignment of their boots meets the dark, slick ground, marking the boundary between the line and the open field.
