Rain-Dried Banners in Huánuco Festival Square

by Alec Valdez

Heavy wet fabric banners hang from metal poles in a symmetrical row, their vibrant reds and yellows muted by the thick tropical overcast. Water droplets rest on the woven fibers, running down to pool on the damp cobblestones of the public square. The wet season air hangs visibly heavy, casting a soft, diffused glow over the staging lane. No people are present, leaving the colorful textiles as the sole focus against the gray sky. The ground reflects the dull light, showing the saturation of the drying paint and thread. One stream of water drips from the hem of the central banner, landing with a small ripple on the stone.
