Merchant Counts Notes Under Bulb at Fish Counter
by Rodney Lowe
Soft overcast light washes over a fish counter where a merchant sits beneath a single swinging bulb. The bulb hangs from a weathered metal hook, casting a focused pool of warm yellow glow on the wooden counter surface. The merchant's hands move rhythmically, stacking crisp banknotes into a neat pile beside a row of silver scales. Behind the counter, glistening fish scales reflect the diffuse gray sky visible through the open bazaar entrance. Damp patches on the concrete floor mirror the overhead awnings, which catch the faint morning light filtering through the haze. Layers of depth recede into the background, where blurred figures and hanging produce signs create clear bustling activity. Moisture coats the metal surfaces and creates slight condensation on the glass display case. One stack of notes rests against the edge of the scale, its crisp edges against the rough texture of the worn wood.
