Nanning Market Vendor Counts Coins Evening
by Amy Owen
Honeyed evening light spills across a cluttered market stall in Nanning while a vendor leans over a wooden counter to count coins. The wet season air leaves a slight sheen on plastic sheeting draped behind the stall and damp patches on the concrete floor. One bare bulb hangs from a rusted wire, casting a warm, yellow glow that competes with the fading natural light. Stacks of paper money and loose change sit on a worn scale, while plastic bags of produce hang limp from hooks above. The wide panoramic view shows the full length of the stall, revealing rows of empty fruit crates and the closed shutters of neighboring vendors. The vendor's hands, stained with soil and ink, move methodically over the coins, their shadow stretching long across the counter. A faint reflection of the bulb shimmers on a glass jar lid near the edge of the frame.
