Mist rests on the narrow Via dei Giubbonari in Milan, softening the neon pink and blue reflections from a late-night bar sign onto the wet cobblestones. A fishmonger, his yellow rubber boots stained with river mud, maneuvers a heavy wooden crate toward his stall, the wood grain slick with condensation. On the counter, a few ceramic mugs sit near a discarded newspaper, while a small metal watering jug rests beside a basket of unwashed clams, their shells glistening in the gray dawn light.
